Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
